Recently, the Social Work Station in Wuhan’s Qingshan District partnered with Petrochemical Community to organize a science and technology education outreach activity for Xiao Yu (pseudonym), a child from an underprivileged background, at the Intelligent Manufacturing Experiment Center of HXIT. The event adopted a "tech education + social work" model, using hands-on experiences to help children understand mechanical principles.

Automotive Structure Lab Experience
In the Automotive Overall Structure Laboratory, guided by instructors, Xiao Yu learned the basic components and operational principles of cars through physical models and dynamic demonstrations. He then operated the experimental bench of the automotive electrical Anti-lock Braking System system experimental bench to observe the dynamic responses of the anti-lock braking system and simulated starting an engine while recording changes in dashboard data. He marveled, “There are so many hidden mechanisms inside a car!”
Energy-Efficient Racing Car Interaction
At the Huayao Dream Chaser Racing Team studio, HXIT’s student volunteers showed Xiao Yu their self-made energy-efficient racing car and kart. Team leaders Dai Yifan and Wang Zhuang explained the vehicle production process. With the volunteers’ assistance, Xiao Yu sat in the driver’s seat of a energy-efficient car adorned with a "Floral Cotton-padded Jacket" themed livery and experienced simulated track driving.
Laser Engraving Practice
In the special processing technology training room, Xiao Yu used a laser engraver for the first time to engrave the name of "Petrochemical Community, Qingshan Subdistrict" and his own name onto a stationery box. After completing his work, he joyfully said, “I’ll take this home to show my grandma!”
This collaborative initiative by the community, social work station, and HXIT explored innovative approaches to science and technology education outreach. It also highlighted the unique value of tech education in supporting the psychological development of left-behind and disadvantaged children.
